Commander’s Log:
Well, whaddya know? I get up this morning and ride down to Deck 2, and the first thing outta Kelly’s mouth is that I have a new message at my Private Terminal. About time — things have been hella boring around here since beating up the Collectors! Anyway, it’s from Illusive Man — who else — with a tantalizing subject line: “Arc Projector.”
So, get this: Ol’ Smoking Man says Cerberus has passed off a new “advanced electrical attack device” to me. It was recently tested on some geth during a “highly successful” skirmish in the Skyllian Verge. (I won’t tell Legion that part, but “they” probably already know.)
Well, I’d sure like to test it myself, but the galaxy’s awfully quiet these days. I guess it’s finally time to start up that New Game+ …
-Shepard
The Arc Projector heavy weapon add-on is available for free to
Mass Effect 2 owners with a
Cerberus Network account.
In-game item description: “The arc projector ionizes targets with a nonvisible laser to ready them for a high-voltage electrical attack. As the lightning-like bolt hits its first target, a sophisticated autotargeting system paints succeeding targets with the ionization laser, allowing the electricity to take the path of least resistance and arc between them. An entire enemy strike team can be shocked to death with a few pulls of the trigger.”

Last night, during the — super awkward — Final Fantasy XIII launch party in San Fransisco, Sony’s Rob Dyer took a big shot across the bow of any Microsoft representatives in the audience by promising a pending announcement of exclusive content for the PS3 version of the game.
Today, on PlayStation Blog, Dyer revealed that the PS3 version includes a “secret in-game item” for Final Fantasy XIV — a similar, or perhaps the same promotion offered in Japan. Additionally, PS3 players can enter for a chance to beta test Final Fantasy XIV, which has only been announced for PS3 and PC.
The in-game item might be interesting (baby chocobo vanity pet, please), but we’re not really enthralled by a “potential opportunity” to get in on the beta. A potential opportunity? So there’s a chance that there’s a chance we’ll be able to get into the beta? Well that’s slightly better than no chance of a chance, we suppose.

As Steam shows no signs of slowing its dominance of digital distribution for PC (and Mac!), it’s only natural that more niche services would arise; not really to oppose, but to compliment Valve’s service. Enter Desura, a distribution platform similar to Steam, save for one important aspect: It’s focused on independent game developers.
Primarily, Desura will try to give a home to those games turned away by Steam. Though the service won’t just open the floodgates to everything, its creator (and indie mod site) ModDB says it hopes to make acceptance or rejection much more transparent than Valve’s process. Desura is described as a community-based service, intended to foster better, more symbiotic relationships between developer and fan.
Desura isn’t slated to go live until April, but you can get an early look over at Rock Paper Shotgun.

There’s really only one important thing to take away from the new trailer for The Sims 3 Ambitions expansion. The expansion allows players to extend the lives of their sims, endowing them with many different career options, including inventor, fireman or a detective. None of that is important, though. What is important, is that the expansion allows you to be a Ghostbuster. Legal reasons probably prevent it from being called ghost busting, of course. Atari and EA’s lawyers wouldn’t want anyone crossing the memes, after all.
Check out the ghost busting catching action — along with the other professions — in the trailer above.

Alright, look folks, if you have any intention of purchasing the upcoming Dawn of War II expansion Chaos Rising, we once again urge that you jump on the pre-order deal and get yourself a free copy of Saints Row 2. So when you’re done getting chaos all risen up, you can spend some time shooting poo onto buildings. Seriously, that’s really a gameplay option. In fact, you might wanna just go grab that joint right now.
Oh, and there’s a trailer above for the DoW2 expansion’s multiplayer additions, if you’re into that kinda thing. But you can only watch it if you’re an adult — so clearly we couldn’t watch it.

Over the next two days, a significant chunk of the Joystiq staff will be boarding planes, trains and dirigibles, all heading towards the sunny environs of San Francisco for GDC 2010. Of course, the folks aboard the dirigibles will probably arrive a few weeks late, because airships outside of the Final Fantasy canon are awfully slow. Except, of course, for the one Balloon Boy almost made his maiden voyage in. Then again, we suppose its top speed was boosted by the fact that there wasn’t actually a child in its undercarriage. Wait, what were we talking about? Oh, yeah — GDC! Be there.
Below are our seven favorite webcomics from this past week. Check them out, and vote for your favorite after the jump. We’ll tally up the votes on Friday, provided we’re not too busy getting beaten up for all the mean things we’ve said about various games this past year.

Modern Business (Digital Unrest)
ApocalyPS3: Party Like It’s 1999 (Another Video Game Webcomic)

Open up that 40 oz. of Bawls and pour one out for Walter Day, who just this past week announced his intentions to retire as head of the gaming world’s official scorekeepers, Twin Galaxies. In an interview conducted by TG’s Josh Houslander, the regularly pinstripe-clad referee and musician took the time to not only spell out his future plans (he’s focusing on his music), but also detail the upcoming inauguration of the International Video Game Hall of Fame and Museum in Ottumwa, Iowa.
“I like to dream big and shoot for the stars, and that’s what I’m doing now,” Day says in the lengthy video interview (found in full after the break). He says that he’ll be on hand for the inaugural ceremonies on August 5 – 8, but in the future, Day will be little more than an attendee at various Twin Galaxies events. Everyone here at Joystiq would like to wish Day the best in his future endeavors.

We never considered the possibility of an Xbox Live moderator being elevated to folk hero status — the topic of last week’s Wrapup winner, Penny Arcade’s “The Gods of Modernity.” Then again, we suppose it’s not unthinkable. In our minds, the moderation of a massive gaming service is roughly equivalent with being a giant, ox-domesticating lumberjack. Thanks to everyone who voted, and congrats to Penny Arcade!
Second and third place went to Brawl in the Family’s “Moveset” and Jeph Jacques’ “Mass Effect Comix,” respectively. If you’ve got a favorite strip you’d like to see in tomorrow’s Wrapup, don’t be shy. Just leave a link to it in the comments of this post, or send in a tip!

We can’t be gaming all the time, despite our best efforts, and from time to time we’ll actually take advantage of the movie-playing abilities on our gaming systems. JBO features our top picks for XBL, PSN, Netflix’s Watch Instantly and Blu-ray each week.
Recommendation of the Week:
Ponyo (Blu-ray, $39.99 MSRP, much lower at most retailers)
If you don’t know who Hayao Miyazaki is yet, then you need a crash course in gorgeous Japanese animated films with amazing storytelling. He’s like the Japanese Walt Disney, and
Ponyo is his latest film. It’s a wonderful fantasy that was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s
The Little Mermaid and he’s put his own particular spin on it. A young boy named Sosuke rescues a female goldfish, Ponyo, and they set off on an adventure together. The Blu-ray disc includes an ultra-crisp transfer of the film, which features hand-drawn animation, and a look inside Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli. We’re offering up five sets of Miyazaki films with this Joystiq Box Office, so read the rules at the bottom of the post to enter. Five winners will receive
Ponyo on Blu-ray, and standard DVDs of
My Neighbor Totoro,
Kiki’s Delivery Service and
Castle in the Sky. Truly magical filmmaking.
Read on after the break for the rest of our recommendations, and let us know what you’re watching!

If you just so happen to be the square wheel that couldn’t get enough of Divinity II: Ego Draconis last year, you’re in luck. Publisher dtp entertainment has announced that an add-on will be released later this year, adding more than 30 brand new quests and about 15 hours of gameplay to the RPG. Divinity II: Flames of Vengeance will see release on the PC and through the Xbox Live Marketplace, and will update the game’s world of Rivellon a completely revamped engine (for graphical and performance upgrades) as well as new updates on characters familiar to players of the first game.
There’s no price yet, but it is targeted for a release in August 2010. In the meantime, you can browse the gallery below to see early screenshots of the add-on. Commenters have been saying to us that this game suffers from more than its share of bugs and issues, so maybe an engine revamp will help smooth that out.
