GDC: This is what Unreal Engine 3 on iPhone looks like 10 March 2010 at 8:35 pm by SaigmedySeese

Unreal Engine 3 on the iPhone … it looked better in person!

While we’ve yet to see Unreal Engine 3 ported to Nintendo’s Wii or Sony’s PSP, Epic did undertake the considerable task of squeezing its seemingly ubiquitous middleware platform onto Apple’s similarly ubiquitous iPhone. According to Epic’s Josh Adams – Epic Games’ senior console programmer – that could be due to fundamental hardware limitations in the other platforms. You see, the iPhone 3GS has a PowerVR SGX graphics processor which supports programmable shaders. According to Adams, “Programmable shaders are something UE3 is pretty much dependent on.”

Though you’re probably most familiar with Unreal Engine on Windows, Xbox 360, and PS3, Adams says the engine also runs on Nvidia’s Tegra 2 platform, on Linux, and on Mac, though (Adams notes) “we haven’t shipped any games on those platforms yet.” Adams says the iPhone port was “a fun ‘Can we get UE3 onto the iPhone?’ kind of project.” Though Adams’ presentation was exceptionally technical – this is the Game Developers Conference, after all! – it’s fascinating to hear about the technical underpinnings and workflows that result in this type of outcome.

+ Video: The elusive iPhone Shoryuken By chrisdeparis 10 March 2010 at 9:30 am and have No Comments

The jury is still out on Street Fighter IV for iPhone, but let it be known: You probably won’t pull off a Shoryuken — the “Rising Dragon Fist” — on your first try. Or the second. Or the third.

We learned this very quickly when trying out the game at Capcom’s Fight Club event during GDC. Granted, there is a simplified input configuration — which we discovered after this video was shot — but longtime Street Fighter fans could get a tad miffed by all the whiffs.

Should you make the $10 investment for SFIV, on your phone, you’ll probably want to spend some time in the game’s expansive “Dojo” training mode before hitting the world circuit.

+ King of iPhone Fist: Pocket Gamer says Namco releasing iPhone Tekken game soon By Endymarbel 05 March 2010 at 8:45 pm and have No Comments

Tekken 6 for PSP

Street Fighter IV isn’t the only fighting game to be shoehorned awkwardly into the iPhone. According to Pocket Gamer, an anonymous Namco staffer has confirmed that a Tekken game is on the way to the platform — a platform that, we feel we should remind you, lacks not only a high-quality arcade-style joystick, but any mechanical controls at all. Last year, Namco’s Jonathan Kromrey mentioned that the company was considering porting its fighting games onto the iPhone, and it would appear that nobody successfully dissuaded the publisher.

No details were given about the game, except that its development is near completion. We’d say Soul Calibur is next on the list, but Gameloft kind of already did that.

+ iPad launches April 3 with largest video game catalog in the universe* By optiommok 05 March 2010 at 9:43 am and have No Comments

Sometimes, folks, you just have to be in awe of technology. On April 3, Apple will launch a device that’s so large and yet so conveniently tuned to our impulsive consumerism. Sure, at first, and perhaps well into the iPad’s life cycle, most of the games compatible with the device will be designed for a much smaller screen — but they’re just 99 cents!

The goal isn’t to achieve the best portable gaming experience on the market — no! It’s to amass the biggest gaming collection possible. For $699, you’ll get 64GB of iPad to jam-pack with games. Hundreds of them! Trust us, your friends will be jealous (until Apple’s next innovation is unveiled).

The iPad will be released to US retail on Saturday, April 3 in 3 models: 16GB, WiFi-only ($499); 32GB, WiFi-only ($599); and 64GB, WiFi-only ($699). The WiFi-only models will be available for pre-order beginning March 12, and the 3G versions will be released later in April when the iPad also launches in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. Check out Engadget’s coverage for more details.

*Okay, the “known” universe. Who knows what’s really out there …

+ The Red Star to shine on PSP and iPhone this spring By Mohammad Saleh 05 March 2010 at 9:05 am and have No Comments

The Red Star never had its chance to reach an audience. Originally in development by Acclaim for Xbox, the game was delayed when Acclaim ceased to exist, and didn’t make it into stores until 2007 (well after the PS3 launch), when XS Games published the PS2 version to generally positive (and occasionally effusive) reviews.

XS just announced that it’s giving the alternate-universe Soviet shooter-brawler game another shot at success, by releasing downloadable versions of The Red Star on PSP and iPhone. We have no idea how the game will play on an iPhone, but the PSP has buttons very much like a PS2 controller! The publisher offered an “early spring 2010″ release date for both versions, which sounds like soon.

+ iPhone Street Fighter IV has eight characters, will cost $10 By exceceBrooxY 22 February 2010 at 9:30 pm and have No Comments

GamePro has dropped some details on the iPhone version of Street Fighter IV, which is due out in March. The site has word that Capcom will sell the game for $9.99 on Apple’s App Store, and that it will feature a total of eight characters: Ryu, Ken, Guile, Blanka, Chun-Li, Dhalsim, M. Bison and Abel. While it hasn’t shared any gameplay impressions yet, it did post a video, which you can see after the break. Surprisingly, the game looks just like Street Fighter IV, with the ultra moves, same colorful art style and other graphical touches from the bigger console versions.

We’re still not sure about playing with the touchscreen “buttons,” though — while they aren’t in the way as much as we thought from the original screenshots (most of the fighting takes place in the middle of the screen), not having that tactile feedback could be a problem. Still, the game looks good. No exact release date yet, but like all those people hanging out in the backgrounds of these fights, we’ll be watching.

+ Noby Noby Boy available now for ‘iPhone, iPhone, iPod Touch!’ By RebeccaOW29 18 February 2010 at 10:00 am and have No Comments

We want to be up front with you: We’re not entirely sure Noby Noby Boy is a “game” in the usual way we understand it. No, we’re not talking about last year’s PS3 release (though one could argue …); instead, we’re talking about today’s iPhone release.

Let’s examine the evidence: The trailer, included after the break, eschews traditional marketing tactics in favor of puppets and nonsensical dialogue. The screenshots depict a series of seemingly unrelated “functions” (minigames?) including a camera app, a map app, a stretchable Boy app, and others. And our final piece of evidence, Noby Noby Boy is filed under “Productivity” in the App Store and, regardless of its status as a “game” we’re almost certain it’s not going to make us more productive at anything, short of unlocking its mysteries.

While we think calling it a “game” may be a bit of a stretch, as a toy, it’s now got a better price on a more appropriate platform.

+ iPhone It In: Call of Duty: Zombies By demidoza 17 February 2010 at 8:15 pm and have No Comments

I’m a big proponent of games you can play with single taps on the iPhone and, as such, I was pretty skeptical about how well Call of Duty: World at Wars zombie mode would make the leap to the diminutive platform. Though I’ve played FPS games that technically worked on iPhone, they’re very rarely something I find myself returning to.

Call of Duty: Zombies cleverly skirts the issue by providing so much help with aiming, you’re able to focus on what makes the mode so much fun on consoles.

+ Interview: Rockstar vets Lee Hutchinson and Matt Shepcar on their new studio, Double 11 By jurcing 16 February 2010 at 6:00 pm and have No Comments

Having put to bed a past with Rockstar Leeds — and helping to turn out a laundry list of triple-A titles, including the portable Grand Theft Autos, while working there — lead engineer turned studio director Lee Hutchinson and soon to be ex-lead programmer Matt Shepcar recently announced their new development studio: Double 11. Like so many other game devs these days, the two grew tired of big-budget projects with huge staff, leaving in favor of creating their own smaller, mobile titles. “Our small size also means that every single team member is of paramount importance to their success or failure,” the pair told Joystiq in an interview this afternoon.

That isn’t to say that the two have any complaints with Rockstar relating to the recent quality of life allegations. “We had a great time working at the Leeds studio and there are a lot of really talented people there,” they told us. Hutchinson further expanded on his time at Rockstar to Develop. “Rockstar Leeds and the spouse allegations had no effect on our decisions to leave.” In fact, we asked the two how they’d feel about working with Rockstar again in the future, and they told us, “We’d love to work with Rockstar again … our split was very amicable and we hope Gordon [Hall] would consider working with us again in the future.”

To find out more about the studio’s plans — including a prospective Summer release for the its first game and where we might find said game, not to mention an explanation of the “Double 11″ name — join us past the break.

+ iPhone Noby Noby Boy demonstrated by puppets By zicmoombdoorn 15 February 2010 at 10:00 pm and have No Comments

Most publishers make dramatic trailers for their games, with carefully chosen game footage augmented by thrilling cinematics. Namco Bandai did not do that for the iPhone Noby Noby Boy game. Instead, creator Keita Takahashi put on a puppet show in a conference room.

Using adorable handmade puppets, Takahashi provided the clearest look yet at the mobile version, including the stretchable Boy, several minigames and a camera app in which … some cartoon guy hangs onto your photo.

We like this approach to trailers. “iPhone, iPhone, iPod Touch!” See the rest of the videos at Famitsu.
