Bodycount says: One! One new gallery of screens from Codies’ new IP
Taking aim at the “whack-a-mole mechanics” of your typical cover-based shooter, Codemasters is finally ready to take the wraps off Bodycount, the new first-person shooter IP in production at Codemasters Studios Guildford under the direction of Black creator Stuart Black. “Our shredding tech enables us to create a different kind of gameplay, where players and AI can’t hide behind indestructible cover,” says Black. “Here the environment is constantly changing as the game world is shot to hell; it’s going to be a huge amount of fun.”
That huge amount of fun will be built on the EGO Game Technology Platform, an evolution of Codemasters’ EGO Engine, for both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The story has something to do with killing ‘Targets’ – those are the bad guys – on behalf of the ‘Network’ – ostensibly the good guys. In addition to a full campaign, Bodycount will feature expected FPS enhancements like online multiplayer and co-op modes.
Codies’ “first internally produced new IP for many years” will be shredding environments in Q1 2011. We’ll let executive producer – and former Sony London director – Tom Gillo have the last comically hyperbolic word on Bodycount: “From the jaw-dropping devastation caused by firing into enemies or shredding the world around you in a hail of bullets, Bodycount will crystalize that moment of pulling the trigger into an exhilarating sensory overload of action.”
Bodycount confirmed for Xbox 360, PS3; early 2011 release originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 09 Mar 2010 03:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

The initial announcement of Steam for Mac conspicuously omitted the inclusion of the first Left 4 Dead game. The Left 4 Dead blog, however, confirms that the original game will migrate to Mac along with the rest of the announced Valve games in “late Spring.” The post makes it sound as if both games will be added at the same time, but that remains unconfirmed. Because of Valve’s Steam Play technology, you’ll be able to play either game on either Mac or PC, with the ability to share your progress between the two platforms.
Even better, you’ll be able to play with other people across platforms! “Mac and Windows players can go head-to-head,” Valve notes in the announcement, “since both Left 4 Deads are cross-platform compatible. Mac owners can even host their own servers and create their own maps, just like Windows users.” Cross-platform play means that all of these new-to-you Valve games are going to come with massive built-in communities.

[Source: The Tech Game -- in case you couldn't already tell.]
With a pair of Modern Warfare 2 DLC packs set to deploy on the Xbox 360 and PS3 this year, talk around the DMZ has everybody wondering what new stomping grounds will get added. Well, according to The Tech Game, the first pack (due this spring) will be titled “Stimulus Package” and includes five new locales – three brand new and two returning from Call of Duty 4 (Crash and Overgrown).
The images and accompanying video (the latter posted past the break) look legitimate enough, though we’ve sent word to Activision for confirmation. We doubt we’ll hear back, considering the company has a lot on its plate right now, but don’t say we didn’t try!

We’ve never been great counters, but we’d say there are three studios working on major Call of Duty games now. A recent internal memo (as reported by G4) apparently confirms that Infinity Ward — despite all of the recent stuff going down there — will remain “central” to the franchise. So, counting that studio and Treyarch, along with Sledgehammer Games and its own Call of Duty title, that’s … four three! The Count would be so proud of us!
This internal memo reportedly comes from CEO of Activision Publishing Mike Griffith, who said, “Infinity Ward remains central to Call of Duty’s future” and that Activision would continue to “rely on the combined talent, expertise and leadership of the team there for [Call of Duty's] success.”

Stereoscopic 3D visuals can really bring a tear to the eye, especially if your hand-eye coordination is off and you end up jabbing a plastic temple arm into a squishy place. Don’t do that. Instead, CryEngine developer Crytek wants you to marvel at the latest addition to its engine, which will power upcoming urban shooter Crysis 2. This year’s Game Developers Conference (running in San Francisco from March 9 to March 13) will mark the debut of stereoscopic 3D support in CryEngine 3, the company announced.
According to Carl Jones, Crytek’s director of global business development, the technology will enable engine licensees to create 3D content on all supported platforms. It will enhance CryEngine 3’s “LiveCreate” feature, which allows a single editor to create content that’s playable on all three high-end platforms: PC; PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. “There are basically no longer any limits to a designer’s creativity,” Jones said.
We can’t wait to see what kind of sci-fi cyborg shooters all the developers have in store for us at GDC. In 3D!

Initially appearing to be a bit more official than the standard placeholder date, a Brink sweepstakes page on GameStop’s website declares the first-person shooter’s release date as September 7, 2010. Publisher Bethesda Softworks tells Joystiq that the date should be “considered speculative.” A representative for the company explained, “Often times retailers will assign a release date for a game that falls within the game’s announced launch window. While we have announced that Brink is due out in Fall 2010, we have yet to announce an official release date for the game.”
GameStop now notes on its Brink page: “Official pricing and release dates have not been announced by the publisher. These are estimates only and subject to change.”

For those of you wondering just how superior the PC version of Battlefield Bad Company 2 is to the console iterations, the answer lies at least partially in the above PC version walkthrough. Sure, stuff like kit selection and squad layout is a bit more in-depth, and there’s the near-ubiquitous (for PC games) server browsing/dedicated server support — multiplayer count also gets a boosted 32-player count over the console’s 24 — but other than that … alright, that’s kind of a lot. When you also factor in DirectX 11 support (for fancy lighting, among other things), the differences get starker. It would certainly seem that DICE hasn’t forgotten its roots as a PC game developer.
That said, even if you’re a strident console-only gamer, the above walkthrough also gives us our first eyes-on with “Valparaiso” — a multiplayer map apparently set in the Chiléan city. Here’s a shocker: it looks just as impressive as everything else we’ve seen from the game thus far (even more so, graphically speaking, as it’s running on a presumably tricked out PC). Bad Company 2 arrives on your console of choice (minus the Wii) in early March.

When we review a game without finishing it, we call it a Snap Judgment. Read why here.
Time played: 4 hours
I was in for a surprise as I set out for The Secret Armory of General Knoxx with a level 50 character, because as beefy as I thought my Siren was, she couldn’t stand up to what was waiting for me at T-Bone Junction and beyond. Basically, I died. All of the time. I went from having around four million dollars in my bank account down to under a million before I even gained my first level in the DLC — the hefty cost of respawning in the wilds of Pandora. And that’s what made this whole thing so odd.
The expansion — which is intended to give you some more mileage out of your maxed-out characters by raising the level cap to 61 — continues from the end of the Borderlands story, so playing it before finishing the game proper is not advised. I finished my second playthrough with a level 50 character, so to start this add-on and run into such a wall, such constantly merciless opposition, was pretty perplexing.

Ever noticed how you rarely place bullets into the same dude during two consecutive games while playing the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 demo? There’s a darn good reason for that — according to a recent tweet from EA, over 3.5 million people have downloaded the sneak peek on 360 and PS3.
We weren’t sure Bad Company 2 would gain a ton of traction while sharing an audience with MAG and Modern Warfare 2, but apparently we were wrong. Maybe there’s a special portion of the market set aside for multiplayer shooters/preposterous ATV stunt simulators.

Independently-developed FPS Shattered Horizon isn’t the most high profile action game on the market right now, but it’s got two things going for it which we’re betting will capture your attention. The first is that until 4 p.m. EST tomorrow, you can download and play the game for free over Steam. It requires DirectX10 and Windows Vista or 7 to play — but if you’ve got the tech specs to run the game, you can give it a free trial run until tomorrow afternoon.
Oh, the other thing? It’s a first-person shooter that takes place in the zero-gravity environs of the moon. If a cooler premise for a game exists, we’ve yet to hear it.
