Richard Garriott spent years as the ruler of a fictional kingdom before he became a second-generation astronaut. Sounds like the kind of guy you’d want to make a movie about! That’s exactly what filmmaker Mike Woolf and his production company, Beef & Pie, has done, and it sounds like it’s going to be a treat not only for old-school PC game-types who remember “Lord British,” but also anyone interested in the process of going into space.
Richard Garriott: Man on a Mission, a film about the preparation and execution of Garriott’s 2008 trip to the International Space Station, will premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas, with showings on Sunday, March 14 and Thursday, March 18. The film includes “never-before-seen training footage in Star City, Russia’s secretive cosmonaut training facility,” as well as footage of the launch and video taken from space by Garriott. Check out a trailer after the break.

Make no mistake, we’re interested in the upcoming Prince of Persia movie for two reasons: Jake and Gyllenhaal. Saying otherwise is just a lie — for some reason, some of you think worshipping the Gyllemonster is a bad thing? We don’t understand it, but we’re not judging you, are we?
Here on Joystiq, we celebrate the roguish charm of the new wielder of the Sands of Time. And we welcome you to do the same by checking out the latest trailer past the break, courtesy of IGN.

We can’t be gaming all the time, despite our best efforts, and from time to time we’ll actually take advantage of the movie-playing abilities on our gaming systems. JBO features our top picks for XBL, PSN, Netflix’s Watch Instantly and Blu-ray each week.
Recommendation of the Week:
Clash of the Titans ($34.99 MSRP, much lower at most retailers)
Kratos is coming back again soon for his final vengeance (and let’s hope an anger management course or two) in
God of War III (look for new interviews and a hands-on with the complete opening on Monday), and with
Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and a massive-budget remake of Clash of the Titans on the way, this is the Year of Olympus. To get that rolling, we’re totally recommending the original from back in 1981. Yes, it’s dated. Yes, it stars Harry Hamlin, and yes, it’s completely amazing. There’s an all-star cast with Sir Lawrence Olivier, Dame Maggie Smith, Burgess Meredith, and Ursula Andress, among others, and the incredible stop-motion effects of wizard Ray Harryhausen. The film looks impressive (for 1981) on Blu-ray, includes a conversation with Harryhausen and a trailer for the remake, and is packaged in Warner’s nifty Digibook format. We recommended this
back on New Year’s as an XBL purchase, but this disc just gets the whole Olmypus thing Kraken. (Get it?)

click to peruse outfits
Two words, folks: Flame pants. Nothing says “iron fist” quite like Jin Kazama’s classy couture, and these latest shots from the upcoming Tekken film deliver in spades. Be assured, this ain’t no fan-made hullabaloo — we can clearly see someone spent at least a couple hundred bucks making this thing. The film hits Japanese viewers on March 20 and presumably arrives on US shores in the not too distant future. But for now, why not get started on piecing together your Eddy cosplay? How could you resist those sweet contrasting colors!

Recommendation of the Week:
District 13: Ultimatum (800
($10) HD, 480

($6) SD, to rent)
It’s
Mirror’s Edge, the movie! Well, sort of. There’s a hell of a lot of Parkour in both, but
District 13: Ultimatum has much more plot, explosions and general ass-kickery. Written and produced by Luc Besson,
D13:U is set several years after the original
District 13 (and no, you don’t have to have seen that to enjoy this one), and takes place within the same walled-off Parisian ghetto. This time around, some of the residents of
D13 are falsely accused of murdering some cops, which sets up a race against time to contain the situation before the rival gangs blow it out of hand and mass hysteria reigns. Which wouldn’t be so bad, would it? Everyone is so anti-mass hysteria. I say bring it on. Especially when there’s a ton of Parkour involved, even though the word itself sounds so pretentious. Let’s just agree to call it crazy running and jumping.
Also, just a reminder that today is the day that The Dungeon Masters is available on Amazon VOD. Go find your lucky 20-sided die, plunk down the $3.99 to rent this (or $14.99 to buy it) and enjoy.

The Los Angeles Times’ “How I Made It” feature has shined a spotlight on none other than Naughty Dog creative director Amy Hennig, illuminating the secret of how a 45-year-old woman can conquer the gaming industry and nab Joystiq’s Game of the Year with Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. She started out as a film student back in 1989 and says she had a revelation while working freelance for Atari that gaming “was a more interesting and pioneering medium” than even the movies.
She worked her way up the ladder and took chances when they came along. When the lead designer on the wacky Michael Jordan: Chaos in the Windy City left the project, she stepped up and took the job. And having talent and intelligence can’t hurt either — she says that she puts her whole education into gaming, from English lit to film editing, and while she downplays her place as a woman in gaming (”This is a young enough and progressive enough industry” to avoid most problems with sexism, she says), she does admit that she, erm, moderated the male perspective on breast size with some of her developers. Because somebody’s got to, right? Excellent profile of one of gaming’s more unlikely stars.
[Thanks, MikeIriye!]

D3Publisher has announced a worldwide publishing agreement with Universal Partnerships & Licensing that will see the upcoming 3D animated film, “Despicable Me,” transformed into an obligatory video game for consoles (which likely includes the one making a cameo above) and handheld systems. Despicable Me: The Game casts you in the role of Gru, the film’s anguished supervillain mired in a war with his archnemesis, Vector. Expect “a unique blend of action and puzzle solving,” along with “an army of loyal-but-manic minions” and a release date in line with the film’s debut on July 9, 2010.
The developer hasn’t yet been named (uh oh), but we’re hoping for a decent tie-in title, if only to spare us from the inevitable one-liner reviews:
- “This is a despicable game.”
- “Only despicable you would spend time on this one.”
- “This game is not fun but it is despicable which is funny because Despicable Me is the title of this game.”

“Huh?” you say, confused by the very prospect of the Mass Effect trilogy getting the film treatment. Dont’ worry buddy, we’re right there with you. The BioWare space RPG may be getting just that, though, according to Mass Effect 2 project director Casey Hundson in a recent interview with MTV. “Obviously we have a tremendous amount of interest from people in Hollywood to make a major motion picture about Mass Effect,” Hudson said.
Thankfully, Hudson followed up his statement with a conditional position for the possibility of a Mass Effect film. “The most important thing for us is, we don’t just want to see a movie get made … we want to see a great movie get made, if it’s going to get done at all.” We have but one humble request should a movie ever be made of the series: it goes fully 3D — if only for text trees in the third dimension.
Mass Effect movie a possibility, says BioWare originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 23 Jan 2010 20:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

We can’t be gaming all the time, despite our best efforts, and from time to time we’ll actually take advantage of the movie-playing abilities on our gaming systems. JBO features our top picks for XBL, PSN, Netflix’s Watch Instantly and Blu-ray each week.
Today we’re giving away 5 copies of
Moon
on Blu-ray, and to enter you just need to leave us a comment telling us what you’re watching. Doesn’t matter if it’s on your PS3, Xbox 360, PSP, iPhone, PC, Mac, or at the theaters.
Recommendation of the Week:
Moon ($37.95 suggested retail, lower at many retailers)
I was lucky enough to see this film at Sundance last year, and it blew me away. Duncan Jones has crafted a science fiction movie without laser beams, massive explosions and space aliens that is as gripping and addicting as
2001 or
Alien. Sam Rockwell plays astronaut Sam Bell, the only man on the moon harvesting a rare mineral and living a lonely existence. As always happens in sci-fi movies, something goes wrong and shakes Sam’s world up completely. The film looks gorgeous, has an incredible score and a bevy of extras. For an ultimate double-feature, pair this movie with
Sunshine, and you have two fantastic sci-fi movies representing orbs in our solar system. We’re also giving away five copies of this, so be sure to comment to be entered in the contest. Sony may (sadly) not be backing this movie for an Oscar, but you’ll love it.
