Bitmob explores the world of video game voice acting 19 December 2009 at 3:30 am by exceceBrooxY

Bitmob’s Aaron Thomas was recently offered the chance to record some crowd chatter for Major League Baseball 2K10, and he used the opportunity to describe the process of recording video game voice over. Reading his lines off of a television screen, and given situational prompts for each line — bases loaded, etc. — Thomas screamed around 300 lines for the game. As an added bonus, 2K sent samples of Thomas’ work mixed with ambient crowd noise, giving us all the opportunity to see what the final product sounds like.

It’s a neat look into the world of video game voice acting, as well as sound production in general. If you’ve ever been curious about how it’s done, take a look. Just don’t expect Thomas to be putting Nolan North out of a job anytime soon.

+ Smithsonian exhibit ‘The Art of Video Games’ opens in 2012 By IncoraFexonna 08 December 2009 at 7:00 pm and have No Comments

From March 16, 2012 until September 9, 2012, the US’s popular Smithsonian museum will be showcasing something patrons aren’t used to seeing in such an environment: video games. Sure, we’ve seen video game art exhibitions before, but the Smithsonian exhibit will attempt to be “the first to examine comprehensively the evolution of video games themselves as an artistic medium.”

The exhibit, The Art of Video Games, will feature game footage, video interviews with artists and game developers, a history of game consoles and even a few consoles for visitors to play. The museum will also welcome suggestions from attendees and tap Chris Melissinos as guest curator for the exhibit. Our first suggestion for the Smithsonian: hit up Krix for some of his amazing props.

+ Where does the next Tetris block really come from? By levazads 08 December 2009 at 1:00 pm and have No Comments

Perhaps, in the past, during a rousing round of Tetris, you may have found yourself in an existential funk. “Where does the next block come from?” you mused. Sure, it’s easy enough to pin your extraordinary luck (or misfortune) on the wonders of random generation, but what if it wasn’t so simple? What if the real source of your bliss and/or frustration was more … divine?

College Humor introduces us to Tetrises, the God of Tetris. Witness his terrible glory after the break. Just remember that the next time you pray for a line piece, you actually have someone to address. And, if you’re looking for some extra luck, you might consider slaughtering a lesser puzzle game to appease him.

+ Child’s Play raises over $1 million so far By kickJohn 05 December 2009 at 3:00 am and have No Comments

It was announced today that the Child’s Play charity has raised over $1 million so far this year. The charity, created by Penny Arcade to aid children in hospitals all over the world, has already raised a total of $1,010,680.28. Said Child’s Play project manager Kristin Lindsay, “With so may people out of work, we’ve been amazed at the huge response this year.” The charity hopes to surpass $1.4 million by year’s end, which would be on par with what it brought in during 2008.

Several events for Child’s Play have been planned or have already taken place this year. Notably, the Desert Bus for Hope marathon pulled in over $130,000 in November, while Harmonix will be throwing the Ümloud Rock Band night fundraiser on December 9. Readers can find out more about Child’s Play at the official website.

+ GameStop lets you be the N64 Xmas kid By Edwas 04 December 2009 at 5:00 pm and have No Comments

While the above headline is true, you’ll probably have to squint your eyes a bit to see it. You see, someone at GameStop had the particularly brilliant idea of making an application that can plaster your face directly over the famous (infamous?) Nintendo 64 kid. What kid, you ask? You know the one. Yeah, that one. Or, if you’re like us, you can always use a picture of a cat. Apart from the video being holiday themed, we’re not sure how the application will help GameStop sell games. But, then again, we don’t really care. We just put a cat face on N64 Kid’s face. What more could you want?

+ Allotment bar in Glasgow pays homage to Pong By exceceBrooxY 03 December 2009 at 3:00 am and have No Comments

You know, the United Kingdom isn’t a great place to go if you enjoy drinking. The folks there, they just aren’t big drinkers. It’s difficult for them to find reasons to partake in the time-traveling powers of alcohol. Enter: Allotment, a new bar in the Glasgow area that offers thirsty patrons live performance art, music and a bit of the in-between.

Right about now, you’re probably wondering what this has to do with games. Well, this Saturday, the bar will be transformed into a living dedication to retro gaming, with a central theme of “gaming and morality.” There’ll be roulette and karaoke, some arcade gaming. But, more importantly, coordinators will envision a real-life Pong tribute in the space, allowing attendees to participate at any time in the recreation by simply walking up and changing it.

If you’re looking for more information on Allotment, or tickets to attend, then head on over to the National Theatre of Scotland. If after reading this, you’re in the mood to watch that awesome video of Japanese Matrix ping-pong, well … you aren’t the only one.

+ Video game tacticians could save a lot of lives By mihatatu 26 November 2009 at 6:00 pm and have No Comments

From the medium that taught us a console is just a “hard drive with games on it” comes a new episode of NCIS (not to be confused with CSI FYI or CSI NY) that highlights the significant military advantage of employing a video game tactician. But don’t even think about deploying them! As the episode’s summary reveals, “a government think-tank filled with child prodigies” may be the only safe refuge for the killer’s next victim.

You know what else could save a life? Not being so smug.

[Thanks, Danny]

+ Conundrum: Xbox Live tops 2 million simultaneous users By viagratramadolcialis 12 November 2009 at 7:05 pm and have No Comments

In a positively baffling announcement, Microsoft’s Major Nelson has tweeted that Xbox Live has reached a new record: Two million simultaneous users. That means two million people were logged into Xbox Live at the same time earlier today. The puzzling question is this: What in the world could have possibly driven so many people to sign synchronously onto Xbox Live? We can only assume that people are taking part in some seriously heated matches of Dragon Ball: Raging Blast. Barring that, it could be that the Final Fantasy XI Ultimate Collection has brought thousands back into the fold.

We just don’t know what else it could be.

+ Over 2000 GameFly games stolen by USPS worker By FanAUDI 16 October 2009 at 3:00 pm and have No Comments

It’s no secret that there’s some bad blood between GameFly and the US Postal Service but this … this is personal. Philly.com reports that Reginald Johnson, a former Philadelphia mail handler, has admitted to a federal court that he stole 2200 GameFly games — totalling $86,000 in value — before they could be delivered to local subscribers.

Johnson was caught as the result of an investigation into missing GameFly mailings in the Philadelphia area, conducted by the USPS inspector general. The culprit was spotted during a 2008 test mailing under government surveillance, after which Johnson escaped in his SUV, crashed it, and then fled on foot with a duffel bag, which was later recovered. Between the bag and the SUV, authorities uncovered 160 games and a load of Wii Fit units, controllers, a Playstation and GameStop receipts. It would appear that Johnson had been trading the games at GameStop for store credit. He now faces up to 18 months in prison.

When contacted by Joystiq for comment, a GameFly representative stated that the company appreciates “the diligent efforts by the Office of Inspector General agents” to apprehend Mr. Johnson. Do you hear that? It’s the sound of healing.

+ Terrify your neighbors with a real piranha plant By lanasingh 08 October 2009 at 4:00 am and have No Comments

You know those neighbors you have? The ones with fake deer, flamingos and gnomes all over their yard? This is for them. More specifically, it’s to utterly petrify them with abject terror. Have no fear though, for the piranha plant you see above is not real, but rather a sculpture created by one Jaime Margary. We suggest you check out Margary’s Flickr account for a closer look at the piece, which is also accompanied by a baby piranha plant (and a dog that is entirely too calm about whole situation).

And yes, the sculpture will be up for sale on eBay soon. Throw on a motion-activated flamethrower and you’ll have the nerdiest home security system ever devised. Watch a step-by-step video of the sculpture’s creation after the break.
