Video: The elusive iPhone Shoryuken 10 March 2010 at 9:30 am by chrisdeparis

The jury is still out on Street Fighter IV for iPhone, but let it be known: You probably won’t pull off a Shoryuken — the “Rising Dragon Fist” — on your first try. Or the second. Or the third.

We learned this very quickly when trying out the game at Capcom’s Fight Club event during GDC. Granted, there is a simplified input configuration — which we discovered after this video was shot — but longtime Street Fighter fans could get a tad miffed by all the whiffs.

Should you make the $10 investment for SFIV, on your phone, you’ll probably want to spend some time in the game’s expansive “Dojo” training mode before hitting the world circuit.

+ Street Fighter IV available on iPhone tonight By FanAUDI 09 March 2010 at 9:13 pm and have No Comments

Finally, your morbid curiosity about what it would be like to play Street Fighter on an iPhone can be satiated. At a Capcom Fight Club event, Capcom launched Street Fighter IV for iPhone as fans watched — which made for probably the most exciting iPhone game launch of all time.

It’s not showing up on the App Store just yet — Capcom said it may take a couple of hours for the Apple servers to catch up — but sometime tonight, you’ll be able to swipe, swipe, swipe until you finally pull off a Hadouken.

+ Final, glistening Super Street Fighter IV character revealed By dyncpaype 09 March 2010 at 9:10 pm and have No Comments

Capcom has revealed the final new character for Super Street Fighter IV, and he’s … well, he’s a giant dude covered in oil. Like, Hakan actually oils himself up before each round. This has the aesthetic effect of being extraordinarily off-putting, and the functional effect of allowing him to slide across the stage as if it were the Crocodile Mile. And since he’s a grappling-type character, you get these really great squishing noises whenever he grabs another character.

See Hakan in action after the break, courtesy of IGN, and just try to imagine the design process behind this guy. Suddenly a green guy who can generate electricity sounds pretty low-key.

+ Microsoft bringing ‘the full lineup’ of Natal titles to E3 By alinaboom 09 March 2010 at 1:00 am and have No Comments

GDC 2010 is the hotness this week, but according to Microsoft’s Mindy Mount (speaking at a tech conference in NYC), E3 should be fun this year, too. As you might expect, Microsoft is bringing “the full lineup” of Project Natal titles to the convention in June.

We know there are a whole bunch of developers working on Natal titles, including EA, Capcom, Forza Motorport’s Turn 10, and SpawnPoint Studios. Mount promises that Microsoft is “putting some of our best people on coming up with great game ideas for this, and we’re going to have some great stuff.” We’ll start working out now to make sure we have enough stamina to flail our limbs all week long.

+ PC Street Fighter IV only $20 from Impulse, GFW On Demand By jurcing 06 March 2010 at 12:15 am and have No Comments

Following last week’s killer deal on Batman: Arkham Asylum, Games for Windows on Demand continues its series of game sales with Street Fighter IV. Right now, the service is offering Capcom’s fighter for 50 percent off, knocking the price down to a palatable $19.99. Or, if you prefer, Impulse is also offering it for the same price. Of course, it’s worth noting that Super Street Fighter IV will be released in just a month, so you might just skip the whole thing and wait for a couple of weeks.

Unless, of course, the allure of “a nifty little special set of things” is just too much to resist.

+ New Street Fighter IV iPhone media arrives on US shores By demidoza 04 March 2010 at 6:00 pm and have No Comments

Though we all got a first eyes-on with Street Fighter IV’s iPhone appearance not too long ago via an exclusive early look from GamePro, Capcom just officially released the first video of the game as well as a smattering of new screenshots (all 32 of which have been conveniently compiled by Andriasang).

And while the trailer seen above features the same two fighters (Ken and Ryu) that the last video did, we certainly don’t mind getting another chance to marvel at the uncanny vision of Street Fighter IV being played competitively on iPhones; it’s quite like being drunk in North Korea — something just doesn’t feel right. The trailer also gives a “Coming March 2010″ at the end, so it would seem that we don’t have too much longer before we’ll be able to marvel at the game from the comfort of our own phones.

+ Capcom: Street Fighter IV owners will get ’special set of things’ in Super version By alinaboom 02 March 2010 at 9:00 pm and have No Comments

Ever since Super Street Fighter IV was revealed, purchasers of the first game have leveled their criticism directly at Capcom (some of them more vulgar than others) for supposedly devaluing the first title by releasing an updated version with extra features and characters. But now it looks like Capcom may be ready to send some love back the other way: Its VP of Business Development, Christian Svensson, says to MTV Multiplayer that for “those who have purchased and played Street Fighter IV on the system that they play [the Super version] on, there will be a nifty little special set of things that those people will have the option of enjoying that others won’t.”

That’s awfully vague — “purchased and played?” “Special set?” “Things?” “Enjoying?” — No, wait, we do understand that last one. But clearly Capcom has some ’splaining to do. It sounds like an SFIV save will enable some bonuses (characters? costumes? stages?) in SSFIV, and that would make sense, but we’ll wait for more details before we can be sure that players who bought the first version get everything they think they deserve. You know, besides the chance to own and play the game for over a year before the next version releases.

+ Capcom explains $40 SSFIV price, ‘cautiously optimistic’ about Tatsunoko sales By jefflily 02 March 2010 at 2:00 pm and have No Comments

Capcom’s VP of strategic planning and business development, Christian Svensson, officially confirmed the retailer-listed $40 price for the upcoming car vandalism sim, Super Street Fighter IV, in a recent interview with Gamasutra. Expanding on statements made when the game was first announced, Svensson said, “Going $10 above Platinum/Greatest Hits pricing was sort of a nice compromise … It’s $40 — we had two choices, and the economics didn’t work out on one … no matter what, we were fracturing the userbase, and we had to start from scratch.”

He went on to explain that the content was simply too much for a platinum version of the game, and that a new release would render cross-game play between SFIV and SSFIV impossible due to differing “title IDs.” Svensson also teased that those who played SFIV on the system for which they purchase SSFIV will get access to “a nifty little special set of things that those people will have the option of enjoying that others won’t.”

Moving on to the subject of January’s launch of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, Svensson said, “We’re a couple weeks in right now, and we’ve been doing re-orders. We’re not at all dissatisfied with the sales at this point.” As for long-term sales of the game, he added, “We are cautiously optimistic that it’s going to have long legs … the Versus series is well served by Tatsunoko as an outing. It really happens bring Versus back as a viable brand for Capcom.” With any luck that means we’ll see more … interesting mashups from Capcom’s Versus series in the coming years. Maybe Nintendo or Square? Whaddya say, folks?

+ Mega Man Zero Collection delayed in Japan By alinaboom 26 February 2010 at 5:00 pm and have No Comments

Capcom has terrible luck with handheld Mega Man compilations. Remember how a collection of the Game Boy Mega Man games was supposed to be released alongside the GameCube/PS2 Mega Man Anniversary Collection? Remember when that actually happened? (No, because it didn’t.) Now the Japanese website for the DS Mega Man Zero Collection reveals that the game’s April 22 release date in that region has been delayed to an unspecified date.

We’ve put in an inquiry with Capcom about whether this affects the “early summer” release date for North America. But if the company doesn’t know when it’ll release the game in Japan, the other dates would pretty much have to be up in the air as well.

+ RE5 Gold tops Japanese charts; Heavy Rain floods top ten By MelindaStrauss 26 February 2010 at 8:35 am and have No Comments

Even without the PlayStation Motion Controller to back it up, Resident Evil 5 has struck gold for a second time. The PS3 version of Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition (Alternative Edition in Japan) hit the top of the Media Create sales chart in Japan following its February 18 release, selling 143,339 copies. God Eater continues to gobble up attention, taking the #2 spot with 64,192 units sold (while passing 500k units sold to date).

Another big PS3 game also debuted in the top ten this week: Heavy Rain, which fell in at #6, selling 26,775 copies. In a way, the Japanese version is the superior release, because the voice acting doesn’t seem to have been performed by French people faking Japanese accents. See the full top ten after the break.
