Lord of the Rings: Aragorn’s Quest makes ‘Move’ to PS3 11 March 2010 at 10:40 am by levazads

[Wii version]

Warner Bros. Interactive has revealed that, in addition to the previously announced PS2, PSP, DS and Wii releases, it’s putting Lord of the Rings: Aragorn’s Quest on PS3 — with PlayStation Move support. The kid-friendly LOTR game will now be released this fall (delayed again!) on all five platforms, with the Wii version developed by Headstrong Games (yes, that Headstrong Games) and the others by TT Fusion. Of course, the Wii and PS3 versions will be the only ones with motion control, and they will also be the only versions featuring two-player co-op (with the second player controlling Gandalf).

The PS3 version won’t be an exact port of the Wii one, but it’s the same idea — a game for which the Wii was originally the lead platform, now spreading to the PS3 thanks to the existence of a very Wii-like motion controller. It may be the first, but this is definitely not the last time we’ll see this!

+ Bad Company 2 to offer free March 30 ‘mapathy’ cure By levazads 11 March 2010 at 10:20 am and have No Comments

Oh man, EA’s pursuit of Modern Warfare 2 just got hot, as DICE has announced via the Battlefield Blog that on March 30 — the same day the Stimulus Package DLC will boost Modern Warfare 2’s map count — Battlefield: Bad Company 2’s VIP members will receive the free “VIP Map Pack 2,” which adds a Conquest mode scenario to the Arica Harbor map and Rush mode to Laguna Presa.

Both maps aren’t new to the game, however neither has been available for play in the “unlocked” game modes noted above. So, that kinda qualifies as a “map pack,” right? Regardless, it’s free, as DICE boldly proclaims in its jab at Activision and Infinity Ward: “How to avoid ‘mapathy‘ without paying!”

[Thanks, Qwaint]

+ Free White Knight Chronicles weekly quests through June By levazads 10 March 2010 at 8:58 am and have No Comments

You and your trusty White Knight Chronicles monster-slaying team don’t have to repeat the same quests over and over again (though you will, simply for the experience and materials). Every Thursday, starting this week through June, Sony will add new quests to Level-5’s RPG, visible in the world map, and all downloadable for free.

Each week, a new permanent quest will be available, along with limited-time quests that you can only download for two weeks. And to mark the occasion, Sony is giving away a 12-inch White Knight figurine to one lucky player that logs into one of six quests during a certain time period. See PlayStation Blog for all the details.

+ Boldly pay less for Star Trek Online By levazads 09 March 2010 at 8:41 am and have No Comments

If you’ve ever wanted to transport into the massively-multiplayer Starfleet of Star Trek Online, now is your chance to make it so.
Amazon’s Deal of the Day features the game for $28 — a better price than even a Ferengi could negotiate. (Mostly because Ferengi don’t really exist.) Plus, the 44-percent discount off the list price should help take the sting out of the monthly fee.

Amazon has also temporarily discounted the Collector’s Edition, from $80 to $48. Don’t you want the little communicator badge? Of course you do. As with all Amazon Deals of the Day, this one’s over at midnight PT or when the shop runs out of stock.

+ Valve teases Apple announcement of … something [update] By levazads 03 March 2010 at 2:55 pm and have No Comments

We’d love to outright confirm that “OMG, yes, Steam is finally coming to Mac!” but that’d be a lie. Truth is, of the five images that Valve sent out to a handful of outlets (as seen in our gallery below) – each one depicting characters from separate Valve games in some form of faux Mac advertisement (from Half-Life to Left 4 Dead and everything in between) – none provide ironclad confirmation of our suspicion that the developer is likely porting Steam over to OS X.

That said, given the presence of six dots at the bottom of each of the five images we’ve seen so far, suggesting an iTunes-like image gallery with six images, we’re hoping for an actual news release in the not-too-distant future … possibly via that sixth image. For now, we’ve put in a call to Valve and will be speculating wildly in the meantime. Check out the five screens so far in the gallery below and get to the speculating with us, won’t you?

Update: Valve kindly sent over the last image, which unfortunately doesn’t “OMG confirmed!” our guesses. It is, however, the coolest (fake) ad yet.

[Thanks, Joe K]

+ Blur arrives May 25 in the U.S., May 28 in Europe By levazads 03 March 2010 at 9:30 am and have No Comments

With the Blur multiplayer beta coming any day now, we’re anxious to get some quality time with Bizarre Creations’ upcoming racer. In the interim, the game’s official blog details what players can expect from the beta, but perhaps more interesting is what’s tucked at the bottom of the update: a release date of May 25. Europeans will have to wait a few extra days, as the game won’t be in shops until May 28 over there.

While you wait, might we suggest you check out some new screens in our gallery below? That is, if you want to — no pressure or anything!

+ Lego and TT Games sticking together through 2016 By levazads 03 March 2010 at 9:00 am and have No Comments

If you like the Lego (popular entertainment property) series of games, great news: developer TT Games and Lego will be held together like some kind of interlocking toy until 2016 — by which time, the kid for whom you pretend to buy these games will no longer be a kid.

In the announcement of the renewed deal, WBIE notes that the Lego series, including Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Batman games (Lego Rock Band isn’t mentioned for some reason), has sold “close to 50 million units worldwide.” Next up for the Lego/TT Games collaboration are Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 this May, and Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars this fall.

Make no mistake, we’re interested in the upcoming Prince of Persia movie for two reasons: Jake and Gyllenhaal. Saying otherwise is just a lie — for some reason, some of you think worshipping the Gyllemonster is a bad thing? We don’t understand it, but we’re not judging you, are we?

Here on Joystiq, we celebrate the roguish charm of the new wielder of the Sands of Time. And we welcome you to do the same by checking out the latest trailer past the break, courtesy of IGN.

+ Stargate: Resistance developer files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy By levazads 20 February 2010 at 2:30 pm and have No Comments

Stargate Worlds and Stargate: Resistance developer Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment has suffered the slings and arrows of economic turmoil for months now, leading to a number of unflattering reports about the company’s finances. However, it seems the studio is taking steps to get itself back on the right track: A representative for Cheyenne recently announced on its official forums that the developer has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

In the aforementioned forum post, the representative assured fans of the Stargate games that, should the bankruptcy filing be approved, that the company won’t simply shut down while it restructures. He explained, “our entire staff is in-house working on upgrades and expansions for Stargate: Resistance, and we continue to be motivated and excited by the response we’ve received from our customers.” We wish everyone the best of luck with turning the good ship Cheyenne back into more prosperous waters.

+ NECA making action figures based on Borderlands, BioShock 2 and more By levazads 16 February 2010 at 8:06 am and have No Comments

If you appreciated the handiwork of the National Entertainment Collectibles Association on the BioShock 2 props revealed a couple weeks ago, then you’ll be pleased to know the company has revealed that additional video game-themed products are in the works. According to a Figures forum post, five franchises will receive replicas by early 2011: BioShock 2, Street Fighter, Gears of War, Dante’s Inferno and Dead Space 2. Three other projects were mentioned, but not detailed: Assassin’s Creed 2, Splinter Cell: Conviction and Borderlands (which includes an “articulated Claptrap with sound effects”).

You can find a full list of the characters that the company will toy-ify on the Figures forum. Most of them are based on the aforementioned franchises’ nightmarish enemies — but hey, if you feel like lining your desk with Necromorphs and Unbaptized Babies, that’s your prerogative.
